Now Bernie is Feeling The Bern!

Democrat presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders was attacked by his own supporters after telling a debate audience Tuesday night that white people “don’t know” poverty.

CNN’s Don Lemon asked the Vermont senator to discuss “racial blindspots” during Saturday’s debate in Flint, Michigan. What came next let the self-described socialist’s base of support – both black and white – livid.

“When you’re white, you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto. You don’t know what it’s like to be poor…,” Sanders said.

These kids, now grown, from Bernie’s own state might have a different opinion…

Photograph of poor and white children playing among poor tenement houses and abandoned factories in a slum in the tired New England industrial town of St. Albans, Vermont. The trash and facades of the buildings are deteriorated and suggest the poverty of the people living here, who are mostly Caucasian. The city had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Or these people from all across America…

The response to Sanders’ comments was fierce:

“My dad, a white guy, grew up so poor he had to catch his own dinner if he wanted to eat. Bernie can go **** himself,” said a user named CJ on Twitter.

“A monumentally stupid comment, @BernieSanders. Racist toward both whites and non-whites, sh–s on all poor people,” added a user identified as Meteoryan.

“Bernie – I know of a white family who lived on $5 a week. That was what was paid to the man who hauled coal in a horse drawn wagon. In the winter, he would often come home with his clothes frozen to him. Ever had to do any work like that, Bernie? Bet not. I bet you have never had dirt under your finger nails from tiling the land. Bet you never had to hunt in order to put some meat on the table. Or, take the left over biscuits from breakfast soaked in coffee for lunch. Those that had to live like that were God-fearing and loving noble people. You, Bernie, may live in an ivory tower but are just a piece of low-life WHITE TRASH that needs to be thrown into the garbage and carried out to the dumpster.”

“How does he do his research? Watching old reruns of Good Times”? He just insulted whites and non-whites alike. He also white-guilted himself into a now guaranteed loss to Clinton.”

“Bernie, I grew up in a Housing Project in the South Bronx,My Brothers and Sisters(6) My Mom,Dad and Grandmother,in an Apt..Last Time I Looked I was White. Money? Don’t make me laugh. You People in your Ivory tower Can Kiss My Broke ***

A “Sanders for President” thread was even shut down on Reddit due to the backlash, Vocative reported Monday.

I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There’s a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts. — Ronald Reagan
